Behind-the-Scenes Essentials: 3 Skincare & Makeup Products I Rely on On Set

When working across different settings such as bridal, photoshoots, and events, there are a few products I consistently rely on—no matter the client or situation.

Regardless of age, gender, nationality, or skin condition, these items perform steadily and quietly support the final result.
While other products are adjusted depending on skin condition or the concept of a shoot, these three are constant essentials I never work without.

In this article, I’ll introduce three products I’ve used on set for many years, along with how I use them in practice and the professional reasoning behind each choice.

CNP Laboratory

CNP Laboratory is a Korean dermatologist-developed skincare brand, known for creating gentle yet effective products suitable for sensitive skin.
Among them, Propolis Energy Ampule is often considered a pioneer of the ampoule category. I’ve relied on it for years in both bridal and photoshoot settings.

Propolis Energy Ampule

On set, I always use this as part of the skin-conditioning step before base makeup.
It absorbs instantly into the skin, delivering hydration from within without leaving any sticky residue.
Even in hot and humid environments like Singapore, it helps prevent foundation from creasing or breaking down, allowing me to move quickly to the next step—an important factor when working under time constraints.

Why I Use It on Set

  • Suitable for all ages, genders, and nationalities
  • Helps balance both dry and oily skin
  • Works well with a wide range of skincare and base makeup brands
  • Deeply hydrating yet lightweight, never interfering with makeup
  • Low risk of irritation, even for sensitive skin
    (Patch testing recommended if concerned)

What Is an Ampoule?

An ampoule is a highly concentrated skincare product designed to deliver intensive nourishment to the skin.

While concentrations vary by brand, they are generally understood as:
Ampoule > Serum > Essence
(There is no officially standardized percentage scale.)

Origin of the word:
“Ampoule” originally refers to a small glass container used for pharmaceuticals.

About Propolis

Propolis is a natural protective substance created by bees from plant resins.

In skincare, it is known for:

  • Supporting the skin’s barrier function
  • Providing high-level hydration
  • Enhancing glow, firmness, and elasticity
  • Helping prevent skin irritation

This makes it particularly reliable on set, where clients may be sensitive to environmental changes or stress.

GUERLAIN

Founded in Paris in 1828, GUERLAIN is a luxury French brand long trusted by professionals for its consistent quality.
Radiance Booster Perfection Primer has a fresh, gel-like texture that melts into the skin instantly.

Radiance Booster Perfection Primer

The main reason I use this primer is its ability to smooth and level the skin effortlessly.

Its lightweight gel texture spreads evenly, leaving a soft veil over the skin.
By softly blurring pores, uneven texture, and fine irregularities, it allows foundation to apply remarkably evenly.

Why I Use It on Set

  • Lightweight gel that absorbs quickly
  • Naturally blurs pores and uneven texture
  • Transparent finish that works with any foundation
  • Adds fullness to mature skin and refinement to younger skin
  • Subtle fragrance that enhances the treatment experience

What Is a Primer?

Both makeup base and primer refer to products used before foundation, but their focus differs slightly.

  • Makeup Base
Focuses on protection and preparation—hydration, UV protection, tone correction.
  • Primer
Focuses on refining texture, oil control, and improving makeup longevity.

This GUERLAIN product clearly falls into the second category: a finish-enhancing primer.

Origin of the word:
“Primer” comes from Primary, meaning “first.”

Dior

Christian Dior is a French luxury fashion house offering makeup, fragrance, and skincare lines.

When it comes to department-store lip plumpers, Addict Lip Maximizer is widely regarded as a classic.

Addict Lip Maximizer 001

This is an essential lip-care step before any lip makeup.
The shade 001 Pink is a true staple, and I use it on almost everyone on set.

I apply it at the very beginning of makeup, then proceed with eye and cheek makeup.

By the time I return to lips, they are fully hydrated and naturally plumped, creating an ideal base for lip color.

Why I Use It on Set

  • Subtle pink tint adds natural freshness
  • Does not interfere with lip colors layered on top
  • High moisturizing power prevents vertical lip lines
  • Creates natural-looking volume

What Is a Lip Plumper?

A lip plumper is a serum-type lip treatment that enhances hydration and fullness.

Common ingredients include:

  • Hydrating and conditioning agents such as hyaluronic acid and peptides
  • Circulation-boosting ingredients like capsaicin or menthol

These help lips appear temporarily fuller and smoother.

Origin of the word:
Plump — to make fuller or more rounded.

Conclusion

The three products introduced here each play a different supporting role:

  • CNP Ampoule: stabilizes the skin’s foundation
  • GUERLAIN Primer: elevates the precision of base makeup
  • Dior Lip Maximizer: enhances the final lip finish

Together, they help reduce inconsistencies in the final result—something that matters greatly in professional settings.
